TRANSPORTATION and LODGING: The nearest commercial airport to my quail hunts in southeast Arizona is Tucson International. Rental cars are available at the airport. Drive time to Tombstone (Interstate 10 exit 303) is 1.5 hours. I recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express (800-315-2621). Drive time to Patagonia (Interstate 10 exit 281) is 1.5 hours. I recommend staying at the Duquesne House B&B (520-394-2732). Another place to stay in Patagonia is at The Spirit Tree Inn (866-394-0121).
LICENSES: Licenses are available on the web @ www.gf.state.az.us or Big 5 Sporting Sporting Goods at Valencia and I-19 in Tucson. A three-day nonresident bird-hunting license costs $61.25. A nonresident season license costs $151.25. A migratory bird (dove) stamp costs $4.50.

GEAR: Some clothing you should bring: safety glasses, a foul weather jacket, briar proof pants, hat with a visor, light weight leather field boots (vibram soles), waterproof boots, sweater, rain coat and pants, sun glasses, sun screen, chapstick, water bottle and a game vest. We will be hunting between 3,000 and 6,500 feet so be prepared for occasional inclement weather. You must supply your own gun. I recommend 7½ or 8 shot for quail and 8 or 9 shot for dove. A good soft cooler is needed to carry your birds home.
DOGS: If you decide to bring your dogs you must understand that you and your dogs are hunting in a desert environment. Hazards your dog may encounter while hunting quail in Arizona include the following: javelina, coyotes, porcupines, skunks, mountain lions, bobcats, jaguars, bears, coatimundi, snakes, dehydration, heat stroke, cactus, sand burrs, mesquite thorns, invasive weed and grass seeds, abandoned mine shafts and valley fever - a potentially deadly fungal disease.
TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE: Clients are responsible for their own trip cancellation insurance. For information on trip cancellation insurance go to travelguard/Sportsmans .
